Wabash Railroad Bridge
Wabash Railroad bridge at Lake Decatur in Illinois. This concrete arch bridge was built for the Wabash in 1907.
Wabash merged with Norfolk & Western in 1964. N&W then merged with Southern Railway in 1982 to form Norfolk Southern.
Here SD70M-2, NS 2657, brings train 13K from Elkhart, Indiana over the bridge on a beautiful fall afternoon.
Union Pacific 3985 - UP 3985
UP 3985. Steam 4-6-6-4. Designed by Union Pacific. Built by American Locomotive in 1943. One of 105 Challenger models produced from 1936 - 1943. The only one still operating.
Operated in "regular" service until 1957. Retired in 1962. Restored in the early 1980's.
Burned coal to produce steam until 1990. At that time it was converted to operate on No. 5 oil.
Can run at a top speed of 70mph.
